This gale. Remember Gigi’s chin gripped

in nut-jewelled fingers and tilted,

throat eyed for pearls. South, the Grand-dam,

North, a quavery salty old sook

but still a patriach.

And this blue, how it smalls

it, how it brightens, clipped in strings

in her vanity case; how the old satin-backs

scan the billows, the crowds of gale.

I’m a rudder sinewed to these two winds,

tugged his way her way

on my painted pin.

Gigi turns her voice to yolk and royal jelly,

but look at her palms, comb-rough, quietly

pulling-to the gate (beyond the dark byre)

weaving blue twine in an infinity sign,

tugging tight the knot that swells sealed

in rain.
